    Laughing Raven Guitars

    Message from Dean:

    Tradition has to start somewhere.

Using my last name as a guitar name was going to be trouble since people always hesitated when they saw the word Laugh right in the front.  Rather than explaining the pronunciation every single time, I chose to rip it right out and make it a feature.  Add a few letters and Laughren became Laughing Raven Guitars.  The Irish pub style felt right.

Walking my way through the hierarchy of more and more difficult woodworking projects brought me to guitars.  My obsessive nature combined nicely with instrument building.  Much to my joy, every musician who picked them said that they sounded great.  I’ll never forget my first guitar lesson using my first guitar when my instructor said “you made this!  Don’t stop!”  I didn’t.  Don’t know if you caught it, but I made my first guitar before my first lesson.  Oh, I do love a challenge.

Most of the guitars sold in Manitoba come from outside of the country.  There are many guitar makers in Manitoba and so much of their work leaves the province.  It shouldn’t be that way.  I think it is important to know where things came from and who made them.  Having cherished items that were crafted by a single person who focused on every task completely is a wonderful thing.  I make guitars one at a time and I take my time doing it.  It’s not a race, no stop watches were involved, no quotas were met.  Just absolute focus on the best job I can do today.  That's all.

Most of the wood used was purchased from a luthier who was retiring so the wood has been acclimatizing in Winnipeg for a looooong time.  The Koa since 1989, Ebony 1987  and the Sitka bracing 1975.
