Use the gain knob to go from no added grit to tons of gain, and use the tone knob to cut unwanted high frequencies, or to add them in to cut through the mix. The volume knob has lots of output to really boost your signal. The Donut Hole is a great “always on” pedal that can be used for any scenario.
